In his years of retirement, Stan Laurel had one hobby which gave him unending pleasure. To various friends he would send off recordings of English music hall comedians and singers he had loved through the years -- people like Max Miller, Albert Chevalier and Vesta Tilley. Stan had old 78 rpm recordings of them all, and it delighed him to re-record highlights of classic vaudeville acts on tape and send them away as gifts to pals who loved comedy. So it would please Stan very much that many of the gags which he himself crafted be made available to his and Olly's loyal fans. Happy is the man whose hobby is his work, and with stan Laurel this was always true. He not only loved film comedy and the making of it, but he also enjoyed it's craft aspect -- the viewing of the daily shots, the editing of them in the cutting room, and the hundred and one technical details which go into the creation of a good movie. After all morning and early afternoon shooting on the set, he was perfectly happy to spend another five hours putting the day's footage together. Quite the opposite situation obtained with Oliver Hardy. Never one to scant his work, he was, nevertheless, always glad to see mid-afternoon come because it meant a few hours at his pricipal hobby -- golf! One of the reasons why Laurel and Hardy functioned so efficiently as a team, is because Stan's strong creative urges were always statisfied -- Oliver Hardy being quite happy to defer to his partner in these matters. Not that Hardy was ignored: his opinion was solicited, and when he had a suggestion it was utilized. From this harmony of two very different men came Holywood's greatest comedy team -- a team that will be giving pleasure to audiences, many audiences, even some yet unborn.
