Classic Old Time Radio Shows Preserved On Audio CD!

Long before shows like "The Twilight Zone", "Tales of Tomorrow", and "Onse Step Beyond" statisfied the audiences' appetite for horror and the macabre.. even long before TV itself... there was radio with audio fright old time radio shows like "Lights Out". "Lights Out" epitomized the unique style of radio drama developed in the Merchandise Mart studios. Its horrific plots were enhanced by creative sound-effects that reproduced the crushing of skulls, the severing of digits and the eating of flesh. "Lights Out" first aired locally in Chicago (over NBC's owned-and-operated WENR) from January 1st to April 10th of 1934 as a fifteen-minute program. From April 17th of 1935 until August 16th, 1939 "Lights Out" was carried by the NBC network. Supplementing Chicago's skilled corps of radio actors in the spring of 1938, Boris Karloff even took his place behind the mic when he journeyed to the Windy City to appear on five episodes of the show. CBS revived "Lights Out" in 1942-43 and later NBC brought the series back as a New York-based summer replacement in 1945.

But "Lights Out" wasn't the only early radio horror melodrama by any means! "A Witch's Tale" which began regionally on WOR radio in New York, was one of the earliest of the horror genre shows. It also helped begin a trend in creepy hosts that "lives" on to this day in popular entertainment. "Old Nancy, the witch of Salem," was the cackling host of the show originally played by Adelaide Fitz-Allen (pictured below) and she quickly became a favorite of kids in the 1930's, who imitated her quips and cackles. The show enjoyed popularity both the New York regional and Mutual national runs during it's lifespan of 1931 - 1938.
