Every year the hazy shade of October quickly covering the horizon, as ghosts, ghouls, and goblins of the season start to descend upon us at night! Just when you thought it was safe... here comes some old Spirits from the past! This DVD is filled with Vintage Halloween Shorts, Clips, & Cartoons! These rare scare gems include:

"The Man of Stone" -

Presented by Sterling Films, this 1936 black and white short film is an adaption of the original Czechoslovakian tale of "Der Golem", which was the original basis for Mary Shelly's "Frankenstein". The Golem, a giant creature created out of clay by a rabbi, comes to life in a time of trouble to protect the Jews of Prague from persecution. "The Man of Stone" is silent, but features added music and narration. This is a very very vintage and rare short film! Hard to find!

"Colgate Comedy Hour Presents: Abbott & Costello!" -

From 1951-1954 your favorite goofball and straightman / partner Abbott & Costello hosted the popular Colgate Comedy Hour. In this clip from their Halloween show, Abbott & Costello have a few run ins with the Universal monsters, as they were famous for doing! It all starts innocently enough when Bud & Lou go to the Universal Props Dept. to get some props for their show. Met with an unusual mad prop master, and creepily life like monster mannequins in the background of Mr. Hyde, Dracula, The Invisible Man, The Wolfman, & More the hysteria soon ensues. Left alone to inventory some props, Lou Costello first has to fight with a room of ghosts as his ink and pen sets move around the table on their own.. and then he is 'faced' with the presence of The Invisible Man! If all this isn't enough, who should rise from the dusty coffin but Frankenstein's monster himself, who scares the usually calm Abbott right out the door! Two can play the scare game, as Lou turns around to actually frighten the monster! He thinks he's safe, just when he turns around to meet Universal's newest fright, The Creature From The Black Lagoon! This episode was shot right before Universal got rid of Abbott & Costello, and the appearance of Bud & Lou with the Creature may have been hinting at a possible "Abbott & Costell Meet the Creature"... which may have been thwarted when the comedy team left Universal. Who knows?! This was a LIVE black & white show, which is proven by a scene where Bud and Lou start to break up themselves!

"A Terribly Strange Bed" -

This short film was written by Wilkie Collins, the stepson of Charles Dickens, and stars Richard Greene famous for his role of Robin Hood in the 1955 series "The Adventures of Robin Hood". When a socialite (Greene) goes to gamble in a low-life downtown casino, he begins to win and just can't quit. After breaking the bank, he accepts a drink from one of the casino patrons and ends up being drugged. Needing a place to crash, the casino patron ushers him into the upstairs bedroom.. which he soon finds out is rigged! As he begins to drift off to sleep, his canopy bed starts lowering, in an attempt to brutally crush him alive! Someone's out to kill him! Who and why? Keep one eye on the screen to find out, and one eye over your shoulder! "A Terribly Strange Bed" is black & white, and a talky set in France.

"Strange Superstitions" -

Sterling Films Presents the black and white, sound film "Strange Superstitions" which explains the origins of many of the silly superstitions that people live by. But don't just think this is any short film! This film is done in the vein of the old educational films, and has the same corny feel! Follow a squeeky clean nostalgic couple as they go way out of their way due to a black kitten that crosses their path. During their detour, they relay the Egyptian fable of why black cats are bad luck, and explain the myth. Then join a typical Donna Reed-esc boyfriend and girlfriend on a lunch date when.. OH NO, she walked under a ladder! "Don't you know what that means!" the boyfriend exclaims in campy distress. The girl then explains the origin of the walking under the ladder superstition, and that's that! This short in the style of old educational school films is just too hilarious to miss!

"A Haunting We Will Go" -

Famous Studios Productions presents 'A Noveltoon': "A Haunting We Will Go" starring Casper the Friendly Ghost. This is an original Casper cartoon (Pre-Harvey Days)! This 1939 cartoon is in color!

"Fright to the Finish" -

Paramount and Famous Studios Productions presents the 1954 Popeye Cartoon "Fright to the Finish". Olive is reading ghost stories to the boys. Popeye scoffs; Bluto decides to take advantage of this by staging various pranks (a headless man, an animated skeleton, and a sheet-over-balloon ghost). He pins the blame on Popeye and then goes to comfort Olive. Popeye retaliates by turning invisible, thanks to a jar of vanishing cream.

"Dream of a Rarebit Fiend" -

Adapted from Winsor McCay's films and comics of the period (1906), this film follows the established theme: the "Rarebit Fiend" gorges himself on rarebit and thus suffers spectacular hallucinatory dreams including moving furniture, tiny little devils that dance around, and a spinning bed. Black and white, live action, silent with added music. Features what may be the early days of special effects or technicolor as during some scenes the color is slightly sepia toned, and during others the color changes to a bluish tint. Who knows what the makers of this film were smoking, but this short plays like a bad drug trip!! Very very rare!

"Slippery Jim" -

A 1908, silent (with added music), black & white Pathe Comedy starring Maurice Costello (Great Grandfather of actress Drew Barrymore.) as the sly crimincal Slippery Jim. Features early stop motion animation and tons of early visual effects as Jim performs fantastic feats such as disconnected & contorting his legs to escape shackles, and slides out of every holding device you can imagine. Slippery Jim confounds the viewers with his Houdini like escapes from chains, cuffs, cloth bags, trunks, and yes, even the ocean! Later the special effects / stop motion animation continues as cops are split in two, and put back together, people randomly dissappear and reappear, cops are squashed flat and reinflated, and much more! Another rare & kooky gem!

"Land of the Lost Jewels" -

Famous Studios Productions presents another 'Noveltoon': "Land of the Lost Jewels"! starring Jackson Beck (voice of Bluto from Popeye cartoons) as 'Red Lantern' and Mae Questel (voice of Betty Boop) as the little girl Isabel! This 1950 color cartoon shows what happens when Isabel and Billy go fishin, and Isabel loses her emerald Cricket pin named "Hoppy Go Lucky". Red Lantern soon appears to take Isabel and Billy to the 'Land of the Lost' where all lost items go to.. at the bottom of the sea! Don't miss the rockin' tune "Hoppy Go Lucky" sung by the little crickit himself! It'll be a rockin' good time!

"The Underground World" -

Paramount and Famous Studios Productions presents the 1943 color Superman cartoon "The Underground World". The original discoverer's son takes Clark Kent and Lois exploring in unknown regions of Henderson Caverns. Henderson and Lois enter an underground world of hawk-men who have deadly plans for them. What terrible fate await Clark and Lois? Can Superman save them?!?

"Balloon Land" AKA "The Pincushion Man"-

Ub Iwerks presents a Comi-Color Cartoon: "Balloon Land" AKA "The Pincushion Man". This color 1935 cartoon is a classic! Nearly every parents saw this as a child.. and now you can share this cartoon with your child! It's fun for all ages, as your children will enjoy the animation, and the adults will marvel and just how sadistic and twisted the 'toon really is! Join the citizens of Balloon Land.. where everything is happy and gay, until the evil Pincushion Man breaks in and starts POPPING the little balloon children with his needles! Eep! Look closely and you'll even notice the Laurel & Hardy, and Charlie Chaplain balloon people bouncing across the screen! Slightly crazed entertainment (much like other madcap children's characters like Willy Wonka.. a bit creepy!) for all ages! A definite classic!

"Jasper & the Haunted House" -

This is a 1942 rare George Pal Puppetoon. Madcap Models presents "Jasper & the Haunted House"! Jasper the little boy (think a little Sambo boy, or old black minstrals) is on his way down the road with a gooseberry pie when the old scarecrow (think Amos & Andy-esc) stops him and convinces him to visit the old haunted house on the hill. Of course this is all a ploy so the scarecrow can steal the yummy gooseberry pie... but what happens when the scarecrow gets the stuffing scared out of him by the real ghosts?!? Why he plays the boogie woogie on the piano of course! This short was probably banned due to racial slurs as it's very controversial! I've never seen this short anywhere else! Don't miss this Jasper 'puppetoon'!

"The Cobweb Hotel" -

A 1936 Max Fleischer cartoon, directed by his brother Dave Fleishcer, this is another classic cartoon! A spider runs a hotel for flies where he keeps his guests captive. A pair of fly newlyweds arrive and check in. Fortunately, the husband is "flyweight champion". After a pitched battle featuring flying arrows (fountain pen nibs) and a machinegun (aspirins shot from a perfume atomizer), the spider winds up in a bottle of library paste. Yet another vintage classic toon that every parent should share with their kids!

"The Giant Pet" -

By Winsor McCay (who also was involved with the earlier short "Dream of a Rarebit Fiend". This silent, black and white short is done in raw, choppy animation (kind of like looking at a flipbook) and shows the story of a stray dog taken in by a couple. The stray dog is no runt though, as he begins to grow.. and grow.. and grow... to terrifying proportions!
