"Classic... Tales of Tomorrow"!

4 Vintage Episodes of "Tales of Tomorrow" With Bonus Sci-Fi TV Documentary & Other Spine Tingling Rare Promo Reels!

Years before John Newland took you "One Step Beyond"... previous to Rod Serling gently leading you into a dimsension of not only sight and sound but of mind via the sign post up ahead reading "The Twilight Zone"... and long before you were plunged from the workings of the inner mind to the "Outer Limits", early science fiction and horror fans had their tastes for the strange and outre met by classic "Tales of Tomorrow"! Debuting in 1951 and airing for 5 long years til 1956, the classic 30 minute episodic series "Tales of Tomorrow" was one of the earliest sci-fi anthology series. Featuring a different cast of talented players every week, often featuring genre legends such as Lon Chaney Jr. and (of course) John Newland, this show was sucessful despite the limitations of budget and the live-broadcast format. The pilot episode was based on Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and the series often drew some of its stories from the pulps. As it was an early series in the '50s, and was performed live, "Tales of Tomorrow" often displayed the amateurish and home grown feel of early black and white live television, like the gothic soap opera "Dark Shadows"... an atmosphere which may be scoffed at but is nostalgic and dear to collector's everywhere. Regardless of the ever changing cast of horror icons, day players, and character actors, Allyn Edwards served as announcer for every episode and always welcomed us to take time out to sit and listen to the "Tales of Tomorrow"!! Now is your chance to get FOUR of these classic episodes on DVD in superb quality, all of which were originally presented in cooperation with the Sci-Fi League of America! All these episodes have been digitally remastered and are a must have for any collector! As "Tales of Tomorrow" is one of the earliest sci-fi / horror series to ever air on early 50s television, episodes are extremely rare and hard to find. But not here! Episodes included are:

"Frankenstein" - January 18th, 1952. Starring Lon Chaney Jr., John Newland, & Mary Alice Moore. John Newland takes you "One Step Beyond" in this 30 minute episode re-telling of Mary Shelley's classic story "Frankenstein". John Newland plays Victor Frankenstein, who we find sitting with his dinner party guests (including fiancee Mary Alice Moore) telling his friends of his idea of the "perfect man" who WILL one day come to be. How can he be so certain? We soon find out as we discover that the son of the Man of 1000 Faces actually has several faces of his own... one of them being that of Frankenstein's monster! That's right, Lon Chaney Jr. himself dawns the monstrous platform shoes playing a much more grotesque, scarred, mangled, and round scalped monster assembled by the insanity bordering Dr. Frankenstein. While no one could TOUCH Chaney Jr.'s performance of "The Wolf Man" veteran horror actor Chaney delivers a less than horrifying performance as Frankenstein's creation, making it probably the cheesiest portrayal of the monster since William Smith's performance of Frankenstein's monster in an episode of "Fantasy Island"! Although don't knock it too much, something has to be said for Chaney Jr., who upon counting this performance of Frankenstein's monster, has played every major movie monster including Frankenstein's creation, The Wolf Man, The Mummy, & Dracula! The cheesy acting, cheap sets (which move a few times when the monster gets "out of control"), bad lighting (including when the players' watches blind the camera... a common problem with live TV), and smudges on the camera all prove that classic live TV is as good for comedic value as it is for nostaligic purposes. This is a must have, especially if you're a classic horror or Chaney fan!!

"The Crystal Egg" - February 29th, 1952. Starring Thomas Mithell. This episode was presented by "Jacques Kreisler" who provided 'quality watch bands' in 1952. The story written by H.G. Wells presents the question "What would you do if you thought someone from another planet was watching YOU?" Setting the tone of the piece by opening with dramatic organ music, the story begins by introducing you to Professor Vaneck who is listening to a record of his own voice. Then you digress to a pawn shop where a man off the street is offering an unusually large amount of money for a seemingly worthless crystal egg. The suspicious pawn dealer rushes the crystal egg to Professor Vaneck for an appraisal.. after putting the project off for sometime between juggling his busy life with a secret affair with a young 'chic' Professor Vaneck finally gets to looking at the egg. As he peers into it, he sees something "out of this world".. and more importantly he sees someone.. or someTHING looking back! Seemingly obsessed with the crystal, the professor works feverishly for days and days, and after seeing a being from another planet he tries to warn the world that they're being watched. Does anyone believe him? Will the world take heed of his warning or will he be institutionalized? Did he *really* see anything or is paranoia his new disease of choice? What WILL become of Professor Vaneck and the world?!? The one eyed alien which can easily be compared to an early version of the jelly creature from "The Outer Limits" again proves the cheesy 'laugh your butt off' value of classic live 50s sci-fi TV! Don't miss the twist ending from another world!

"Appointment on Mars" - June 22nd, 1952. Starring Leslie Nielson, Brian Kieth Jr., and William Redfield. Presented by Masland Beautiblend Products, this short story is almost another telling of the plot from the comparable sci-fi film "Dark Star". Leslie Nielson (before his "Forbidden Planet" days) and Brian Keith Jr. (later known as Robert Keith AKA "Family Affair's" Uncle Bill) along with William Redfield make up a group of three Mars explorers who land on the planet in order to search for Uranium on Mars. The trio strike it rich when they stumble across acres of Uranium, but something begins to go wrong as Brian Keith and William Redfield both start to go a little stir crazy. The men begin to snap at each other... including a hilarious over the top moment where Redfield suggests "Maybe you've got a fever.." and Keith yells, "I HAVEN'T got a fever. I got a HEADACHE!" The men turn on one another and fight about everything from the possibility of one of the men not testing the air properly, to greed, jealousy, and even over a rabbit's foot! This episode is by far one of the most hilarious episodes in the entire series! Humerous blunders include one scene where Leslie Nielson is standing atop of a Mars rock (which is similar to something you'd see in "Beetlejuice") and the camera pans up too far revealing the studio ceiling, lights, and upper set rigging.. only to have the very same rock MOVE later on!! Not to mention the cheesy space jumpsuits, no helmets, and references to there being wind on Mars.. even though there is no atmosphere in space! The rocket with which the men came to Mars on is seen in the far background of the set, and appears to be a toy rocket-ship.. yet at the end of the episode a special declaimer is made declaring the rocket was provided 'courtesy of the American Rocket Society and Reaction Motors'! As the episode progresses, the men continue to get paranoid of one another as unexplainable thoughts of suspicion continue to enter their minds until finally they turn on one another... Their non-trust and greed ultimately results in their demise, but why? What made them think such thoughts? Was it they who turned on one another.. or did someone else pit them against each other? Another twist of fate ending not to be missed!

"Ice From Space" - August 8th, 1952. Starring Edmon Ryan, Raymond Bailey, and a young Paul Newman. As the story opens a group of astronauts watch the AR76 Rocket launch into outer space, but after 24 hours there is no trace of the rocket which was long ago expected to come back down. Having a rocket go up but never come down frustrates the group who begin to squabble amongst one another. The AR76 eventually lands, but with one more item on board than it went up with.. a block of ice that appeared on board out of no where. Seemingly innocent enough, right? Wrong... the block of ice soon begins to behave strangely as it throbs and glows.. and begins to freeze everything within miles of it, inch by inch. As the freeze spreads like the blob, stealing the warmth of the earth and ultimately killing one of the soldier who was guarding the ice by freezing him to death, something has to be done. How will the Majors / astronauts save the earth from this menace?

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL!

Do you think that's it? Well you're wrong! You also get THREE VERY rare promo reels / trailers included on the same DVD. First you get a rare promo reel for Boris Karloff's "Thriller".. yet another horror based weekly series that had you biting your nails and hiding under the covers. But of course we couldn't leave you without one of the masters himself, Rod Serling.. so as a second bonus you also get a rare promo reel for "Night Gallery", Rod Serling's second TV dive into the macabre. These two promo reels are very lengething, averaging out to be over 15 minutes in combined length. Finally, as a third threat you get the TV trailer for the cheesy b-movie gem "Tales of Frankenstein"! "Tales of Frankenstein" was a horror / sci-fi TV show that was meant to be.. but never came to fruition! In 1958 Hammer (kings of English Horror) Studios made a TV pilot entitled "Tales of Frankenstein" and shopped it around, but it was never picked up. Now you can get a sneak peak at what would've been with this rare TV trailer for "Tales of Frankenstein"!!
